I can’t stop thinking about this.

I wonder if he was running on instinct…  I watched a man die on the subway a few years ago.  It’s more common than you think - NYC subways carry millions and millions in the course of a day.  People die and there is never a good time for it to happen to anyone.

There was an older gentleman sitting across from me on the M train.  It was about 6:30am, so I didn’t think much of it when he started leaning over.  It was when he kept going when most people would jerk awake that about 5 of us took action.  We asked if anyone knew CPR in our car, and when we pulled into the next station, we held the doors open and shouted for a doctor (there was a firefighter on the train with us who knew CPR, because that’s how things are in NYC).  No response during CPR.  The older gentleman’s lips were turning blue.

When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics took over and after 2 minutes of no reaction, I watched something that will always haunt my soul existentially, the way this pic does:  The paramedic yelled at this man that he had to get up because he’d be late for work.  And he got a response.  I don’t know if the older man made it, but he had a pulse when they took him up the stairs to the ambulance.

We all got back on the train and headed off to work.  And I sat there completely traumatized by the fact that this man was such a slave to his job that the threat of being late to work restarted his heart.  It’s been over 10 years and I’m still not sure how or to what degree it affected me.  Only that it did.  I’m not bothered by not knowing.  Sometimes you have to let the heavy sit to understand the weight before you can put it down.

“Cats don’t actually love you”

A cat is a small creature in the middle of the food chain that is fully aware that you are a very large thing that could stomp its head in at any moment and yet it chooses to rest its tiny little head on your leg for a nap and spreads out on the floor near you exposing its belly and its most sensitive organs. It brings dead mice and bugs to you to share food.

Don’t you get it? This tiny thing trusts you. It wants to help you too. It licks your leg thinking that it’s helping. It kneads on you to find comfort. It shares its body warmth with you in the cold and gives you your space in the heat. It hisses at other mammals it sees outside including other cats in an effort to protect its family.

Cats love you so so much. But they will keep trying to eat plastic.

Good news everyone! Google has disabled AI responses if you search for “Trump” and “dementia”

Which means you can now search without AI results by appending “does trump have dementia” at the end of your search query!

Just realised that whenever I see the phrase “I wouldn’t touch that with a ten foot pole” I automatically think of a ten metre pole. Like a comically long pole. A ten foot pole isn’t all that long. That’s slightly less than two of my body lengths. Not touching something with a ten foot pole still lets you get pretty close to it actually.

Ten foot pole: a spear

Ten meter pole: the center post of a big top circus tent

Ten foot pole: a soldier who wants it outside of stabbing distance

Ten meter pole: a clown who wants it out his fucking circus

It turns out that actually standing by “men and women are not inherently very different” is a reliable way to bother absolutely everyone. Left or right, cis or trans, feminist or misogynist, all cling to the binary for dear life.

From the replies on this post:

Reply by kt--extinction on July 3rd 2025: Though all children have a lot of variation in personality, that one year I did help with a woodwork camp with prepubescent children, i did notice an obvious trend when it came to hammering nails. Though about equal amounts of boys and girls did just fine, the ones who struggled did it differently. The girls were hitting too lightly, and boys were hitting really inprecisely. I knew they where too young for hormones to be involved with strength, so I figured it to conditioning. I thought back to the broken toy horses and doll houses vs the oft-stepped on toy dinosaurs of my childhood and considered the relative durabilty of the toys they were probably given and what play styles where probably encouraged. The advice that helped the girls struggling was "hit it like you're trying to break it" and for the struggling boys it was "slow down and focus". Though it is in no way universal, a lot of behaviors are reinforced or punished in us differently depending on what gender we're assigned. I feel like that causes most of the differences, not some inherent brain chemistry.ALT

The differences are culturally imposed, which means that they can be changed. They are not inherent, inevitable, immutable.

And a society that turned a site of the mass murder of (mostly) women into Halloween Disneyland.
